Title: Overwhelmed

Summary: Losing sucks

Zdeno Chara stood in a corner of the empty shower room in Montreal, the water pounding the small of his back,  holding Aaron Ward in his arms. 

Bandoliers of ace bandages crisscrossed Aaron's legs, holding massive bags of ice around both knees. The bandages sagged, pieces of ice dropping haphazardly, plopping and cracking on the cement floor, and the veteran defenseman,  the feeling in his legs now almost unbearable as the painkillers and adrenaline wore off, leaned on his captain and wept. 

Zdeno put one arm gently around his defensive partner's heaving shoulders, rested a cheekbone against Aaron's close-cropped head, and spoke quiet words of comfort. 

The water ran, the ice dropped, the tears fell. The playoffs were over.

Thanks very much for the comments. This image just popped into my head when I saw poor Aaron take a shot off his "good" knee and crumple in pain. I don't see it as sexual at all, though it can certainly be interpreted that way. I just see Zdeno Chara as a guy who'll be there for any one of his teammates, even if all they need is (literally) a shoulder to cry on.

great imagery, especially the idea that the season is washing away (dreams and hopes, yeah, but everything else, too, and you start clean on the other side).

Thanks. This was another little ficlit that wrote itself - just the look on Aaron's face after that game broke my heart, and I know that he went into the locker room and cried, not only from the pain of losing, but the pain in his legs. He was playing hurt, big time.
