Nick jammed on the brakes and sat squinting through the waterfall of rain running down his windshield. That couldn’t be Tomas, could it? He unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car as Homer came toward him, looking frantic.

“What the hell are you doing out here, Tomas? Get in the car.”

    “No, I can’t, I have to find Luka, I can’t find Luka.”

“What?” Nick cocked his head. “Come here, get in the car, you’re drenched.”

“Nick, I can’t find Luka. She got out and I don’t know where she is. I can’t leave her out here, you know how scared she is of storms.”

“How did she get out?” Nick put an arm around Homer and pulled him close.

“I don’t know,” Homer replied miserably. Nick could feel him shivering. A T-shirt wasn’t much protection against the cutting wind and freezing rain.

“We have to get you home, Tomas, you’re going to get sick out here, dressed like this.”

“No, I can’t. I have to find her Nick, she’s scared of storms, I don’t want to leave her out here alone.” Tomas ran a hand over his hair, sending a spray of water in Nick’s direction.

It wasn’t until Nick looked closely that he realized that not all the moisture on Homer’s face was rain. “Oh, Tomas. We’ll find her, don’t worry.” He looked around helplessly though. Where the hell were they going to start?  He knew there was no chance of getting Homer in the house until the dog was found, but he also realized that the dog was probably miles away, holed up somewhere. “Do you have any idea where she went?”

Homer shook his head and Nick groaned mentally. Thunder boomed overhead, nearly making Homer jump out if his over-soaked skin and Nick gave him a gentle squeeze. Homer didn’t like storms either, so it was a testament to how much he loved his dog that he was out here hunting for her. “Can we a least look for her in the car?” Not that there was much chance of them seeing her, even if she did decide  to come strolling along the road.

Tomas shifted, then ducked as a broken-off branch whipped overhead. Looking into his eyes, Nick knew Tomas didn’t think they’d find Luka either. “We can try.”

Twenty minutes later, Homer was shivering so violently Nick pulled over again and looked at his lover. “You need to get inside and change Tomas. I’ll take you home.”

“I can’t , I have to find…”

“I’ll come back out and look for her Tomas. I’m worried about you though.”

Homer sniffled. “Promise?”

Nick knew Homer would insist on going back out after the dog. “I promise baby. You have to get out of those wet clothes.”

“I know,” Homer said miserably. He was torn between finding Luka and freezing. Finally he nodded. “All right. I’ll go home.”

~Thank God~  Nick thought, though he knew he was resigning himself to a long wet hunt. “How long were you out looking for her?”

“Couple hours.”

“A couple of hours? In a T-shirt? Tomas, why didn’t you grab a jacket?”

“Wasn’t thinking about it, for sure. Don’t yell at me, Nicky.”

Nick held his tongue, Tomas didn’t need a lecture. He pulled into the driveway and hustled Homer inside instead.

~

“Here,” Nick said softly. He handed Tomas a blanket. “Wrap that around yourself before you get dressed again. Warm up first.”

Homer’s teeth were chattering and Nick shook his head again. “Just stay in here and rest, okay?”

    “Luka…”

“I know, I’ll go in a minute. Just want to make sure you’re warm.”

    “Eh, I’m fine, for sure.”

Nick kissed him and rested their foreheads together. “I’ll try to find her Tomas, but I won’t promise anything.”

    ~

Nick was reflecting on the likelihood of the phrase “needle in a haystack” being swapped out for “Bernese Mountain Dog in a thunderstorm” when he saw the bedraggled black bundle lying in the road. He slammed the brakes for the second time that day and nearly hydroplaned along the road. Fucking rain. Thunder ripped over head as he stepped out of the car and walked toward it, recognizing the familiar white collar of fur.

He swallowed thickly as he approached, hoping she hadn’t been hit, trying not to think about how he’d nearly run her over himself. “Oh Luka.”

The dog’s tail waved weakly, sending a few splashes of water onto Nick’s already wet jeans and Nick let out the breath he’d been holding. She was alive at least. He hunkered down to lift her and she yelped loudly, making Nick’s heart hammer again. His back protested at lifting a hundred and five pounds of shivering, wet, muddy fur but he carried her to the car and set her carefully on the backseat. Homer would be grateful she was alive, and hopefully not hurt.

~

Homer pulled a clean shirt over his head and went back downstairs to continue pacing. He hadn’t been able to sit down since Nick had left again. He prayed his lover managed to find the dog, hoped they were both okay. He curled a leg underneath him as he sat down on the couch again, nibbling at a fingernail.

He’d tried to desensitize Luka to thunderstorms, playing the sound effects CD at low volume and gradually turning it up, comforting her during storms, ignoring her during storms, trying to distract her with simple commands and treats…nothing had worked. Tomas scowled darkly. This was all Nathan’s fault. His former lover had tended to “accidentally” leave the dog chained outside when Homer was on the road. Homer had only found this out because Nathan had gone out of town, leaving Luka in the yard, when they’d come back from Vancouver. It had been storming that night, Homer recalled. He remembered pulling into the driveway and hearing Luka howling in the back, audible even over the thunder and wind.

He bit ferociously at his fingernail again, getting up and pacing again. He glanced at the clock, wondered briefly if Nick was all right and realized Nick had been gone for nearly two hours. Homer groaned softly, feeling guilty now for sending Nicky back out in the rain. He should be out there finding Luka himself.

He bolted for the door as soon as he heard the car pull up, meeting Nick on the porch, feeling his stomach drop when he saw Luka draped over Nick’s arms. “Is she okay?”

“She’s alive. She hollered when I picked her up to put her in the car though.” Nick debated for a few moments before continuing,” I nearly ran her over, she was laying in the street.”

“Oh God. Here, I will take her.” Homer brought her inside and set her down. Nick went to grab some towels, coming back and helping Tomas dry her off. She whined when Homer pressed her ribcage but Nick was relieved she didn’t yelp this time.

“She hasn’t broken anything has she?”

“Eh, I don’t think so. Just bruised,” Homer said. “Someone might have hit her, I don’t know.”

“Well, she’s home now,” Nick said, cleaning the last of the mud from Luka’s legs. “We can be grateful for that at least.”

Homer got up to grab the blanket he’d discarded from the couch and wrapped it around the dog before carrying her over to the fireplace. “Down. Stay.” He turned back to Nick, realizing for the first time that Nick was cold and shivering too. “Oh, Nicky, I’m sorry, you’re all wet too.”

“I’m fine,” Nick answered. He shucked his shoes off and started for the stairs.

Homer threw himself into Nick’s arms, disregarding the mud down Nick’s front and startling the other man. “Thank you. For finding her.”

“I care about her too, Tomas. And now you’re all muddy.”

“Smell like wet dog too, for sure.”

Nick shivered. “I’m going to go get in the bathtub. You coming?”

“Yeah, for sure.“

~

“Warm now?” Homer mumbled drowsily. They were curled up in bed, still damp from the tub, sweaty now. They’d come in from the bathroom with full intentions of getting dressed but had got to fooling around. They’d wound up making out, and then making love, on the bed.

Nick trailed his fingers down Homer’s back, feeling the muscles jump. Homer’s back had always been ticklish. “I’m warm now. You warm, Luka?”

She looked over, not moving from her spot at the end of the bed and Nick laughed. “Had your fill of storms today?”

“She’s ignoring you,” Tomas whispered, nuzzling Nick tenderly.

“Mm. You’re not though.”

“No.” Tomas straddled him and bent down for a kiss.

Nick returned it happily. “Again?”

“Yeah, for sure. If you want it.”

“I always want you, you know that.”

~

Luka hopped off the bed at Homer’s first moan, wriggling underneath, prudent as always. Neither man noticed. The thunder had stopped some time ago, though beads of rain were still rolling down the windows. Inside, it was warm and all was well.
