"Call your mother," he finally said.
Johan hesitated for a brief second and nodded. "Please don't hurt her," he whispered once more before doing as ordered.
End part 5
It was, Chris thought the weirdest summoning he'd ever been at, if he looked at it rationally. Instead of some long drawn-out formula, Johan simply asked, "Mamma?" and, in a cloud of green smoke and a sharp acidy smell appeared a thin, small woman with long, dark hair.
"What's wrong?" she asked. She drew back slightly at the sight of the three Wizards, but moved toward her son. "Johan? What's wrong?"
Johan hesitated briefly, and she whirled around to glare at the Wizards, her eyes flaring up darkly. "What did you do to my son?" she asked, her voice inhumanly low and dangerous.
"Protected him when you failed," Chris told her sternly.
She hissed and turned her attention toward Johan. "Is that true?" she asked and reached out, intent on touching him.
The circle around her prevented that, and she pulled back with a loud hiss.
"Mamma!" Johan said and quickly stepped out of his own circle, not caring for Dan's hand on his elbow. He reached for his mother, thereby breaking the protection the circle offered.
If she wanted to hurt them all, Chris thought with a sinking feeling, Johan just had given her the chance to do it.
She reached for his arm and hissed loudly when her fingers burned at the contact. "What did you do to him?" she snarled at Chris. "Take your spells off of him, he is my son."
"I can't," Chris said. "Unless you want every Wizard in the area to knock down his door and try to kill him."
"I can protect him," she insisted angrily.
"Mamma," Johan interrupted softly. "Something happened a few days ago."
"It is nothing for you to be concerned about," she told him stiffly.
"But I am concerned," he said and shrugged slightly. "Not only because there's suddenly half a dozen Wizards waking me up and wanting to perform an exorcism on me."
"I had to take care of a few things," she said. "I didn't realize you would be exposed."
"What kind of things?" Chris asked.
"Not important," she said. "Why did you summon me?"
Chris thought for a moment, trying to get his priorities straight. Every instinct he had fought against the simple fact that he was talking to a Demon, but he couldn't help it. He needed to make sure Johan was safe.
"I need to know what you did before to keep Johan hidden from us."
She frowned. "Why should I trust you, Wizard?"
"Because I know your son is half-Demon and I haven't killed him."
Dan instinctively took a step closer to Johan and put his hand on his back, forming a connection and building up a thin shield of energy and magic between Johan and Chris.
"Stop it," Chris snapped. "If I haven't killed him yet and I'm doing what I can to protect him, I'm obviously not going to kill him."
Dan set his jaw. "What if it was Kris?" he snapped back.
Chris ignored him and turned back to Johan's mother. "I need to know how to hide his nature from other Wizards," he told her. "No more surprises."
She raised an eyebrow. "Seems to me like you have that covered," she said coldly.
"Mamma," Johan interrupted and reached out to touch her shoulder briefly. "He's a friend."
"I do," Chris told her easily. "My way gives him headaches and will keep him from playing hockey. Now, I can either experiment with ways to hide him and risk worse consequences or you can help me."
She hesitated briefly before asking Johan, "Is that true?"
He nodded.
She thought for a moment.
"If I tell you how to protect him without harming him, will you let me touch my son?"
He hesitated but nodded.
Everybody knew that trusting a Demon was very dangerous, but he didn't really have a choice. The energy lines around Johan indicated that he still wasn't feeling better, maybe even a bit worse, and Chris didn't want to risk serious injuries.
"I will not tell everyone," she said. "Only you, Wizard."
Dan looked like he wanted to say something, but Chris gave him a sharp, warning look, and he clenched his teeth tightly to stop himself.
"Only me," he agreed.
She turned to glare at the others.
"Please step into the other room," Chris forced himself to ask the others nicely. "It's fine."
"Okay," Kris answered quietly, but Chris knew perfectly well what his Companion really wanted to say.
"Pavel, Mac," he insisted.
Pavel nodded and quietly followed Kris into the living room. After a second, Mac grabbed Dan and gently forced him to follow them.
Johan's mother looked to make sure they couldn't hear before whispering the instructions to Chris.
He nodded and quickly memorized them.
Finally, he took a step back. Under her expectant eyes, he slowly removed the tightly-woven spells around Johan. As soon as the last one was gone, she wrapped her arms around her son and hugged him tightly.
"I missed you, Mamma," he told her.
She murmured a quiet reply in Swedish, but she didn't let go of him for a long while.
Dan cleared his throat. "Can we come back in now?"
Johan nodded and took a step back. "Mamma, I want you to meet Dan," he said. "He's a very good friend."
"A Wizard," she pointed out, but she had a small smile on her face, and she didn't let go of him yet. Chris carefully checked the energy lines around them, and even when he took into account that Demons simply were different than humans, he couldn't detect anything but worry and love between mother and son.
He allowed himself to think that the entire thing was going to go well, but didn't relax his guard.
He watched her all the time while she was in his house, and when, after a few minutes, she decided that she needed to return home, he only doubled his attention.
"I'll see you at Christmas," Johan told her, hugging her tightly.
"Call me if you need me," she instructed while shooting Chris a glance that was clearly meant as a warning.
"I will," he said.
"Good," she said, reached up to kiss his cheek, and disappeared the same way she'd appeared.
"That it?" Pavel asked in surprise.
Johan shrugged. "She was making dinner," he said by way of explanation. "Didn't want to burn the rice."
"What happens now?" Dan asked Chris.
Chris shook his head. "Could she have disappeared whenever she wanted?" he asked Johan. "Was the whole 'can't touch you' thing just a show?"
"Yes to the first, I don't think so to the second," he said.
Chris took a deep breath.
"Okay," he said. "You and me, we'll have to sit down together and have a long talk about Demons eventually."
"Not tonight?"
"Not tonight," Chris agreed. "And you and me - " he glared at Dan. "We need to talk too."
He nodded. "We'll call you tomorrow," he told Chris, keeping a hand on Johan.
"Not good enough," Chris pointed out firmly. "You'll be here at 10am."
Dan nodded. "We'll see you then," he promised.
They left, and Chris turned around to face Mac.
The Warden lifted both hands. "I didn't do it!" he said quickly, but with a smile on his lips.
"That could have gone worse," Kris offered.
Chris nodded darkly. "I don't like how she managed to break through all the spells we put around this house," he pointed out. "How can I be sure that you're safe if they break through them so easily?"
"Maybe it was just because Johan was here and they're linked by blood?"
"Maybe." Chris sighed. "I'm not going to invite another level two Demon into my house to test that theory."
"Don't worry about it," Mac told him. "I can stay the night, if you want, but you know how to fix Mule now, right?"
"Yeah," Chris nodded. "I'll modify it a bit, but it's a simple spell, I think."
"Good," Mac said. "You want help cleaning up in here?"
Chris sighed and waved his hand tiredly. The broom in the corner started moving on its own, cleaning up the salt lines on the floor.
"Have you ever thought about getting them to carry pails of water too?" Mac asked him.
"Haha," Chris said. "I'm not some Apprentice anymore."
Kris rolled his eyes. "Is Mac staying all night or not?"
Chris shook his head. "You don't need to," he told the other man. "But if you want to stay for dinner, you know that you are more than welcome."
"Are you even going to be able to see straight to make dinner?" Mac asked. He shook his head. "I'll pick up Chinese or something."
Kris rolled his eyes. "I cooked," he explained. "We just need to heat it up again."
"Okay," he said. "I'll do that while you clean up in here."
They quietly got to work, and soon, the kitchen showed no signs of belonging to a Wizard, and the three men sat down around the table to eat.
"Any other surprises I should know about?" Mac asked them.
Chris looked up from his food. "Surprises?" he asked confusedly. "What kind of surprises?"
"Half Demons popping up, summoning Demons, want to let the poor warden in on what's going on?"
Chris put his fork down. "It's complicated," he started before telling Mac how he'd been woken up by the turbulences in the magic field that usually indicated a Demon, and how he'd ended up at Mule's house, plus everything that had happened afterwards.
"Is everything going to be okay now?" Mac asked.
Chris smiled.
"Yes," he said, even if there was no way he could be sure.
He just hoped it would be.
~*~*~
"You wanted to talk to us," Dan said when Chris opened the door the next morning.
"Yes," Chris said shortly and opened the door wider. "Come in."
Johan and Dan exchanged a brief look, and then the Companion nodded and stepped into the house. It wasn't as if he could run away, he thought quietly, and even if he could, he didn't want to. These were his friends, and no matter what Chris had decided he would do, he wouldn't fight it.
"I've modified the spells your mother used to keep your Demon side hidden," Chris said as he pushed the door closed. "She kept you bound to her - that way, she always knew when you were in danger, or close to too many Wizards or Demons. It had the disadvantage that, should anything happen to her, the spell would break, but you know that."
Johan nodded. "She got a little nervous when I started playing here," he admitted. "Close to so many Wizards."
Chris chuckled. "I can imagine," he said. "Anyways, I'm going to weave an independent spell over you. It should hold even if something happens to me, but without the sideeffects of our last spells."
"And then what?"
"Give it another day or so, just to make sure the side effects of the previous spells have completely worn off and you can go back to playing hockey," Chris said.
"That's it?"
He nodded. "We know that you're a half Demon now, but that knowledge won't go outside of those of us who have been here. Don't kill anyone and we won't have any problems. You can go home after I talk with Daniel."
Johan hesitated briefly and glanced at his Wizard, but another brief nod by Chris made him nod in agreement.
"Why don't we step into the den," Chris said to Dan. "For our little talk."
Dan followed him into the room, remaining quiet as Chris closed the door.
"You going to slap my hands now?" he finally asked and stared at Chris defiantly.
Chris sucked in a breath as he struggled to keep back the surge of anger. "Keep this up and you'll be lucky if I don't take your stick," he snapped. "I'd expect better behavior from Jimmy and he's still training."
Dan crossed his arms in front of his chest. "You were threatening my Companion."
"You contradicted me in front of a level two Demon," Chris growled. "I don't care if I was threatening your mother, you don't do anything but give a united front in front of Demons."
Dan looked as if he wanted to sy something, but something held him back. Chris suspected that some part of his Wizard training reminded the younger man that Chris' words were true, but he wasn't sure until Dan said, "I understand."
"If you'd listened and thought about it, you would have known I wasn't threatening your Companion," Chris went on. "I was trying to protect him and you were too stubborn to see that. If she'd exploited the weakness that you showed .... you've read the stories you know what could happen."
Dan bowed his head. "Yes," he murmured.
"If you ever cross me like that again, I'll take your stick," Chris warned him.
"Yes, sir," Dan murmured. "I apologize, Great Master of Wizards."
"We have to stand united," Chris said. "Go take your Companion home and make sure he's feeling better."
Dan nodded and bowed his head obediently.
Chris resisted the urge to relent, Dan had to know that he couldn't get away with what he had done. "I'll see you at practice tomorrow."
"Yes sir," Dan whispered again. "Permission to take Johan home now?"
He nodded and Dan, bowing once, quickly left he room.
Chris sighed. He felt the disturbances in the magic wards around the house as Dan and Johan left, and he stood and went to search for his own Companion.
He needed to do something nice for Kris, for sure.
He just hoped this was the last he was going to have to deal with Demons for a long while.
Shaking his head, he laughed a bit. It was highly unlikely that he would be that lucky. He still was the Wizard of Oz, and Demons were everywhere. It was his job and his responsibility to find them, and make sure that they didn't hurt anyone.
Wrapping his arms around Kris' waist and pressing a gentle kiss to the back of his neck, he just hoped that the next Demon they found would not be a friend.
