Insatiable Part 3
Brendan’s POV
This was an amazing day. I love spending time with Brayden. I only wish I was able to do this more often.
I am almost at Erin’s Mom’s to drop him off before I head home and get ready to go back to the rink when my phone rings.
"Hello..." I say as I pull over to the side of the street.
"Bren..." The man who is my world says into the phone. "It’s Erin, there’s been an accident, you need to come to Vancouver General." His voice almost on the verge of breaking.
"What happened? Is she ok?"
"You better just get here... We are in the Emerge..." And with that he hangs up.
It only takes me about twenty minutes to get to the hospital, I just pull right into the Emergency entrance, fuck this if I get ticketed or towed. I pull Brayden out of his car seat as the security guard comes over to tell me to move my truck.
"Oh... Mr. Morrison. Your wife’s inside, you can leave you car here, I’ll come find you if it needs to be moved." He says as he leads me inside.
"Erin Morrison..." I ask at the desk.
"Just down the hall..." The orderly points down to my left. I start walking quickly; Brayden perched on my hip, his arms tight around my neck. I see him standing almost hidden behind the curtain.
"Hey, what’s going on?" I ask as I come around to see an empty bed. "Where is she?" My voice showing sounds of panic. I can feel my eyes filling with tears as I expect the worse.
"She’s in X-ray, she’s ok. They think she might have a broken ankle." He says as he wraps his arms around me.
"What happened?" I ask as he looks down into my eyes, he wipes the tear off my cheek with his thumb as he takes Brayden from me with his other arm.
"I stopped by your place, to see if you were home yet and Erin was there, I guess I startled her, she slipped on the steps and twisted her ankle quite badly. If I hadn’t caught her, she would have really hurt herself."
"Daddy... Where’s Mommy?" My little man asks, he can sense I’m worried and has almost gotten himself to the point of crying as well.
"She is with the doctor..." I say as I lean towards him, squeezing his belly just enough to make him break into a quick smile.
"Daddy... Stop..." He giggles and buries his face against the big shoulder of the man holding him.
"Erin..." I say as I see them wheeling her back towards her bed. "Are you ok?" I take her hand and help her back into the bed.
"Yeah, they think it is just a sprain, the X-rays will be ready in a few minutes." She says as I notice Brayden trying to get to his Mom. I take him and sit him gently on the bed; he wraps his arms around his Mother before he notices the ice-pack on her foot.
"Mommy owie." He says as he points to her foot.
"Yes, Mommy fell down, she hurt her foot." She says quietly as she hugs him tightly.
I think this is what I miss most of all with our separation. Seeing what a great mother she is to our little boy. I wish things could be different for us, but I know that they never will. I am seeing someone, she is well aware of this, but she doesn’t know it is the man that is standing right here. I suspect that she is seeing someone as well. So many times when I call she is out and her Mom is there with Brayden.
Brayden starts moving around on the bed, his curiosity getting the better of him. I can see that the slightest movement is causing twinges of pain to rip through Erin’s foot, so I pick him up off the bed. He doesn’t want to be held, he wants to get down and explore these new surroundings.
"You want me to see if I can find him a juice or something?" I turn towards my boyfriend as he reaches out for my son. "I will try to keep him busy so that you two can talk." He says as Brayden climbs up into his arms, he turns and walks away. I can hear him talking quietly to Brayden as they head out to the hallway; my son perched comfortably on his hip.
I look back at Erin. "What happened?"
"I took that box of things you wanted by your place on my lunch hour." She starts. I had already left it at your door and was about a block away when I forgot to leave something in the box." I take her hand into mine and squeeze it gently.
"As I was coming down those few steps to your door, he was at your door, He startled me, I slipped off the last step. If he hadn’t caught me, it could of been worse."
"Have you called your work yet?" I ask.
"No, my phone is in my car, and that's still back at your place." She says as I pull out my phone so she can call in before they really start to worry.
She smiles as I hold her hand as she talks to her boss. Thankfully he is a great guy and she’s not going to be in any kind of trouble at work because of this. When she is done, she hands the phone back to me, I have to call Coach, I am going to be late, it is already 3:00 and we are supposed to meet at the rink before our flight out this afternoon. I explain to him what has happened and who else was here, he said that he would arrange a flight for us for later this evening; we can just join them in Calgary later tonight. This would give us plenty of time to get Erin back home. I also called her Mom to let her know what is happening. She will be at the house to help out when we take her home.
By the time we are both finished making the calls we need, I notice her looking past me towards the chairs out in the hallway. I turn to see my man holding my boy, fast asleep in his arms, a juice box sitting on the small table beside them.
"He’s a great guy..." I hear Erin say softly.
"Yeah... He is." I say without looking back at her.
"How long has this been going on?" She asks, I turn to look at her, trying to look like I don’t know what she is referring to. "Don’t try to deny it. It’s so obvious." I move over to her and sit carefully on the edge of the bed. I look into her eyes before looking back to my boyfriend, who looks like he is ready to fall asleep as well, but his arms still holding my boy.
"Not long... about a month." I say quietly, my eyes still on the man I have grown to love. I turn back to her as I realize that I just outed myself to my wife. "We never before... never when we were together. You have to..." She cuts me off by placing her fingers to my lips.
"It’s ok, I believe you." She almost whispers. "I know you better than you think; remember, we've been married for almost 6 years. I would have known if you were having an affair."
"You’re not shocked that I am seeing a man?" I am really surprised at how calm she is with all this. "Do they have you on drugs or something?" I ask, not sure that she is really aware of what we are exactly talking about here.
"Bren, I am fine, I am not drugged up, though I wish I were right now, my foot is fucking killing me." She laughs, she never swears, especially since Brayden was born.
"I just didn’t know how to tell you, I thought you’d be upset." I say quietly as I look back out into the hallway.
"I think he is nice, he’s so good with Brayden." Her voice snaps me back to reality. I turn back to her. "You know you can talk to me about anything." She smiles.
"I know, I just didn’t know how you’d take this little bit of news." I try to smile. "After all, it’s not every day you find out your soon to be ex-husband is fucking another man." I say embarrassingly as she takes my hand into hers.
"Bren... You know I only want you to be happy."
"So..." I start, trying to change the subject. "You are seeing someone..." I tried to state it as a comment, but it seemed to come out as a question. She just smiles, I knew she was.
"Who is he?" I ask calmly.
"Just someone from the office. David, you’ve met him." She responds shyly.
"How long has this been going on?"
"I’ve only been out with him a few times." She replies quickly. "We haven’t even slept together yet." She quickly adds.
"No... No, I didn’t mean..." I say apologetically. "I never meant it like that. I’m happy for you." I squeeze her hand. "I really am. I just want you to be happy too. We both know things aren’t going to get any better between us." She has an odd look on her face. "Right?" I ask as she looks away.
"Erin..." I move up to sit on the bed and lean across her to see her face. "Did you want to try to work things out?"
"I left you a note..." Her voice so quiet, barely audible above the hum of all the electronic equipment nearby. "I just thought... Maybe, you know, we could give it another shot. I didn’t realize it was this serious with whomever it was you were seeing." She finally turns to look at me, her eyes brimming with tears. "I miss you so much; your son misses his Daddy." A single tear rolls down her cheek. "We want you to come back home..."
I look back at the man I have spent almost every minute of my time with over the last month, the man who has become such a huge part of my life. He is cradling my son in his strong arms, looking like he is about to nod off as well. What do I do? If she had told me this a month ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to try to work things out. But he is involved now. I love Erin, I always have, but I think I have fallen in love with him too.
We manage to get Erin and Brayden home, stopping by my place so I can drive her car back to her place. I can’t help thinking about what she said on the drive back to our house, which is now technically her house. She really wants to try to work things out. I never thought she would ever want to try, if I ever thought she would of, I never would have let anything happen with him, not even that night in Calgary.
But now… What the hell do I do now? I miss her, I miss spending time with my son. I do love her, but I never thought I would ever get another chance. It’s not like there was anyone else involved with our break up, it just seemed like we had grown so far apart over the past year, and it didn’t really look like there was any chance of reconciliation.
I never stopped loving her.
But he is involved now. What do I do about him? I know he loves me, probably more than he should.
We get Erin settled and wait for her Mom to get there before we leave, then we drive me back to my place, I notice the box that Erin had left for me, I don’t have time to go through it, I have just enough time to grab my suitcase, we have tickets waiting for a flight that leaves in less than 90 minutes and we have to stop at his place still. Luckily, he has his bag ready to go and just have to stop and pick it up from his place. We drive in almost complete silence to the airport, dropping the car at the Valet and quickly head to check in.
The seats weren’t together on the plane, but the man who has become such a big part of my life, being the smooth talker that he can be, talked the person next to him into switching seats with me so I could sit next to him.
"You ok?" He asks after about 30 minutes in the air.
"Just tired..." I say as I lean my head back, my eyes closed. I need to talk to him about what happened at the hospital today. I’m not sure what it is that I really want, but I do need to make some big decisions, and I need to make these decisions soon.
I don’t think I said more than a few more words to him the whole flight. He knew something was bothering me, but he didn’t pry, even in the cab to the hotel, he just sat quietly.
I was surprised that Coach put us together, I was supposed to be rooming with Sopes this trip, but I guess with both of us showing up so late, he felt it was better to put us in the same room. I suppose this might be a good thing, I really should talk to him, but I wasn’t planning on doing this tonight.
"You’ve been pretty quiet." He finally says as I place my suitcase onto the bed. "Everything ok?" He asks as he comes from behind, wrapping his arms around me, pulling us tightly together, he kisses the side of my neck as I lean back into him.
"Just a lot on my mind." I reply softly, his lips still on the curve of my neck.
"Anything I can help with?" He turns me slowly in his arms, his eyes lock with mine. "Bren... What’s going on?"
I can’t look him in the eyes; I just pull away from him and sit on the edge of the bed. He sits next to me, taking my hand in his.
"Erin wants to try to work things out..." My voice barely a whisper as I look down at the floor before me. His hand slips from mine as he stands; he looks down at me, his eyes filled with so much hurt. He turns and moves towards the door.
"Trevor... Don't go..."
