This is my entry for the second challenge at
hockeychallenge - Expectations.
Title: Birthday Expectations
Rating: PG-13 (For mild swearing)
Pairing: Thomas Vanek/Derek Roy (Buffalo Sabres)
Disclaimer: I don't own these players, nor do I even know them in real life. I'm just a big fan.
Summary: It's Thomas Vanek's birthday, but it appears that someone forgot...
“Happy birthday, Thomas.”
Thomas Vanek looked up from tying his skates after he heard a mellow voice hit his ears to see his captain, Chris Drury, standing in front of him. He was holding out a card, and by the looks of it, it was a Hallmark brand. Chris wasn’t really a cheap kind of guy when it came to birthdays.
“Thanks, Chris.” Thomas extended his arm out to take the card, and looked at it. The card was embroidered with gold trimming on the sides, and it looked as if it had been custom made, especially for him. “Did you get this customized, by any chance?” Thomas flipped the card to look at the backside, the looked back up at his captain. He laughed, and just went over towards his booth. “It’s sad how you boys know me so well. I hope you like it!”
A small smile crept onto Thomas’ face, and he read the front of the card. “To Thomas Vanek- a great teammate and friend.” He then opened it and looked at the writing on the inside. Thomas could tell it was written by Chris – he recognized that writing anywhere. He didn’t write in chicken scratch, like most of the other guys did. Thomas began to read the message to himself:
“Thomas –
Twenty-three, huh? You guys make me feel so damn old, you have no idea. Seriously, here I am, thirty years old with a wife and two children. You and Derek aren’t even settled in together yet, am I right? Speaking of Derek, you know the really fancy Italian restaurant downtown? Antonio’s? Well, I’m actually friends with the owner, and I said that if he ever sees you two come in, that he should give you a discount. So, after the game tomorrow night against the Canadiens and we get back, you and Derek should go for a late night dinner if you’re up for it. The food’s great, trust me.
Hope you score one tonight for your birthday celebration. :)
Your captain/friend,
Chris”
Thomas gasped, and his small smile turned into a gigantic grin. “Chris…thanks so much! Derek will love this!” Thomas looked up towards Chris, and continued to grin.
“I thought so. Now Derek actually has a reason as to why he would have to dress up going to dinner. I don’t understand why he wears Dolce and Gabbana suits just to go out and get coffee…” Chris laughed, and continued getting ready for their upcoming game against the Vancouver Canucks.
Continuing to tie up his skates, Thomas suddenly realized that Derek hadn’t shown up yet. He hadn’t been at practice earlier that day, but he had called Thomas up afterwards to let him know that he had to do some things – apparently, Lindy had already been told Derek wouldn’t be present. Now he still wasn’t here. Was he sick? Did something happen? Was he…
No, Thomas felt silly for even thinking Derek was cheating on him. Besides, Derek would not have called up Lindy to let him know he wouldn’t be going to practice if he was sleeping with a girl – or another man…Or would he?
Thomas’ thoughts were interrupted by the sudden entrance of the man who his thoughts were focused on – Derek Roy. He didn’t look frazzled, or pale in skin color. The thought of him getting in an accident or being sick was out of the picture now. His hair was also combed perfectly, and his suit wasn’t wrinkled in any sort. Thomas’ heart skipped a few beats – he wasn’t cheating. It’s not like he should’ve been thinking that, anyways.
“Where were you, Derek?” Jason Pominville said, throwing his jersey over his head. “I…um…” Derek looked towards Thomas for a second, and then turned back to Jason. He leaned over near Jason’s booth, and seemed to be whispering something. Thomas couldn’t hear a word that was coming from the booth, and he furrowed his brows in frustration. What was Derek hiding?
“Oh…gotcha.” Jason nodded his head after Derek was done speaking with him. Thomas could faintly see a small smile appear on Jason’s face, but when he noticed Thomas was looking at him the smile disappeared. He went back to putting the rest of his equipment on.
By this time, more than seventy-five percent of the team was out doing warm-ups. Thomas placed the rest of the equipment on himself, and walked over to Derek’s locker. “Hey Derek. Where were you earlier? Why couldn’t you come to practice?” He was afraid he was asking too many questions at once, but he just needed to know.
“Oh, Thomas! Yeah, um…like I said, I had to do a few things. I couldn’t come to practice, but I told Lindy and everything.” He stood on his tiptoes a bit so that he could place a gentle kiss on Thomas’ right cheek. “You weren’t worried, were you?”
“Well, no, I was just curious that’s all, but how about just recently? Where were you then?”
“Ah, it’s not important where I was, Thomas.” He placed a hand on Thomas’ shoulder, and shook him slightly. “Don’t worry about it, okay?” He took his hand off Thomas’ shoulder, and sat down in his booth. “If you’re sure, Derek…” Thomas sat down in the booth next to Derek’s, set his helmet down on the ground, and moved his stick back and forth from his right hand to his left. He waited patiently as Derek finished up getting ready.
“Ready to go? We’re going to see a couple of old friends out there tonight.” Derek grinned, and put on his gloves. “I’m sure this’ll be a fun game, eh?” He ruffled the top of Thomas’ hair a bit, and continued to grin. He then put his helmet on his head, and started heading for the door. “Well, come on!”
“Coming…” Thomas said faintly, but he knew Derek couldn’t hear him. He put his own helmet on his head, and got up to leave. There was only one thought stuck in his mind as he left the locker room:
He didn’t even say happy birthday.
-----
The game had turned out pretty well; the Sabres had tied late in the third period to push them into overtime, which now they were sitting on the bench for the shootout. Daniel Briere had already went and scored, and the Canucks hadn’t scored, so it was Thomas’ turn next. By this point, Derek still hadn’t wished him a happy birthday.
He skated out towards the middle of the ice, and looked around towards all the fans. He could see what a few of them said ‘It’s Millertime!’ ‘These guys are good – SCARY GOOD!’ and the occasional ‘Marry me…’ signs that had one of the player’s names on it. A small, but yet sad, smile crept onto his face when he saw a sign that had ‘Happy birthday, Thomas Vanek!’
Even the fans remember my birthday – why can’t my own boyfriend remember?
No, it wasn’t time to think about that now. Focus, that’s what he needed to do. Focus…
He looked over towards the referee, and he gave him the ok to go and shoot. Thomas lined up with the goaltender, and pushed off the ice with his right leg. He began picking up speed as he reached the puck, and got ready to set up his ‘Around The World’ shot.
Focus…focus…damn it, why didn’t he remember?!
Before Thomas knew it, he had reached the blue line and didn’t have time to set up. His thoughts were boggled, and he couldn’t focus in at all on what he was doing. He reached the area just before the goalie’s crease, and just moved the puck over to the side. Thomas had choked. He knew that. Now, he wanted to go throw himself off the Peace Bridge.
Many ‘Awww’s’ sounded throughout the arena as Thomas headed back to the Sabres bench. No one looked at him, except for Derek, who had left a spot for Thomas to sit. “Hey, what happened out there? It looked like you stiffened or something, when you were about to shoot.” He seemed deeply concerned, and a frown formed on his face when Thomas wouldn’t turn to look at him.
“I don’t want to talk about it Derek.” The arena erupted in cheers as Ryan Miller made another spectacular save.
“Thomas, if this is about ea-“ He was once again cut off by his boyfriend.
“I said, I don’t want to talk about it.” Thomas finally turned to look at Derek, and he appeared to be glaring. Before their conversation could get any further, the goal horn sounded which signaled that the Sabres had won the game against the Canucks. Thomas didn’t even wait for the bench door to open so that he could congratulate Ryan – He just didn’t want to explain to Derek how much it hurt that he had forgotten about his birthday. As he skated over towards the winning goaltender, he tried his hardest to fight back the tears. Thomas really did feel like throwing himself over a bridge, now.
-----
“Thomas, please talk to me.” Derek was standing behind him, as Thomas was putting his suit back on.
“There’s nothing to say, Derek.” He stuffed his skates into his hockey bag. Thomas zipped it up, and lifted it up to place onto his shoulder.
“What the hell’s wrong with you? Why won’t you explain to your boyfriend what he did?” Derek grabbed Thomas’ shoulder, but he shrugged it off.
“Why the hell did you forget about my birthday, Derek?” The locker room suddenly went into a blurb of whispers, as their teammates quietly spoke with one another; taking quick glances at Derek and Thomas every once and awhile.
“But Thomas, I di-“
“Save it. I’m leaving now to get on the plane early so I can get a seat.”
Thomas grabbed his sunglasses off the top of his booth, and headed out the locker room. He turned towards the back entrance to the arena, and placed the sunglasses onto his head. His chin quivered slightly at the incident that had just happened, but he trudged towards where his car was with his hockey bag.
Stupid birthday…What the hell? I’m not supposed to be this upset on my birthday, I’m supposed to be cheerful and nauseatingly sweet to everyone. It’s all ruined now just because of one little mish-
Thomas’ hockey bag dropped to the concrete underneath him as he stared at the spectacle in front of his SUV.
There were what seemed to be hundreds of forget-me-nots, and roses. The roses also came with little white flowers – baby’s breath. They surrounded Thomas’ car, and tied around the vases they were in were balloons shaped like hearts. He shakily placed on knee onto the ground as he inhaled the sweet scent of the flowers. They were beautiful. Thomas noticed a tiny card placed in one of the vases, and he opened it up to read.
“Thomas-
I wanted to do something really special for your birthday, and I felt this was it. I know you love roses, and your favorite color is blue, so I got forget-me-nots, as well. You probably have no room in your house for all of these, I know. I bought each of these flowers out of love for you. There’re two hundred of them, by the way. Unbelievable, right? I bet you weren’t expecting that much. You can count. I stood here for an hour and a half making sure everything was set up right. I hope you love them.
Oh, by the way, in one batch of roses there is a blue one for you. I went everywhere to find it. That’s why I couldn’t go to practice this morning, because I was looking for that blue rose just for you.
I love you so much. I hope your birthday is everything you wanted it to be like. <3
Love,
Derek”
Thomas wanted to cry. He wanted to cry now, and he wanted to cry hard. How could he have been so unbelievably stupid? Poor Derek - He had no right at all to yell at him like he did…especially after everything he went through to get all these flowers.
Thomas placed the card in his jacket pocket, and searched around for the blue rose that Derek mentioned in his writing. In the third batch Thomas looked through, he found it. It was the color of the night sky, and it was beautiful. He carefully lifted it up out of the vase as to not destroy the flowers surrounding it, and made sure not to prick himself. Thomas stared at it for a bit, before putting it close to his lips, and inhaling it’s scent. It was sweeter than that of a red rose, and it made his heart flutter slightly as he gave it a small kiss.
“That’s why I didn’t tell you where I was, Thomas.”
Thomas stopped smelling the blue rose, and got up onto his feet to turn and look at Derek. “I wanted today to be…special, for you. I didn’t mean to keep it from you for so long.” The small center walked up to Thomas, and stared into his blue eyes – or what was his blue eyes behind his sunglasses. “You’re not still angry with me, are you?”
The younger man shook his head, and wrapped his arms around his lover. He made sure as to not crush the rose in his hand. “No. I’m so sorry for getting angry with you. I…I didn’t know.” He took off his sunglasses, and buried his head into the older man’s shoulder. “I want you to know, I appreciate this. This is the best gift I could ever possibly receive.”
Derek hugged the left winger back, and smiled a bit. “I’m glad. I spent days planning this out, you know. I wanted everything to be just perfect.” He rubbed his hands up and down Thomas’ back. “How’s the blue rose?”
“Beautiful.” Thomas whispered into Derek’s ear, and kissed his cheek. “Thank you…”
“It was my pleasure, sunshine.” Thomas could feel Derek grin against the side of his face, and he also smiled.
“Hey, um…after tomorrow’s game – do you want to go to dinner? Chris told a friend of his that owns Antonio’s that we could get a discount there for dinner if we went.” Thomas moved back a bit to look into Derek’s eyes.
“I would love to have dinner with you.” He murmured softly, and he leaned up to give Thomas a soft kiss on the lips. Afterwards, he smiled again. “Italian sounds good, too.”
“Good.” Thomas laughed, and took one arm off of Derek to look back at his car. “Now…how are all these flowers getting into my car?”

Very unique, and I'm glad you could use the baby's breath idea. :D Although I should've said iris or gladiolas, or something...

Thanks for that idea, by the way. :)
