Title: This Is How I Feel
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dragonblk17
Chapter: 2 of ? (I'm extending it)
Pairings/Characters: Thomas Vanek/Derek Roy
Rating: PG
Setting: Buffalo, New York
Disclaimer: Don't own anything in this story. Only pictures I have of them, do I own.

Silence hovered around the room for a few minutes, though it had seemed like hours to the two men who were huddled so closely together in a stall. The last words they had spoken obviously had been something both men feared for so long; the very simple fact that they may not be on the same team next season. If Derek hasn’t been a restricted free agent, things might’ve been going more smoothly for the both of them at this point. Thomas and Derek could be celebrating with each other for the fact that the left winger was staying in Buffalo for at least seven more years. For now, all that encompassed the two men was dead silence.

“When’s your hearing?” The younger of the two managed to tremble out. Derek could hear his accent clearly – oh, how he loved that accent. That was the voice that calmed his own nerves after a horrible loss, and was also able to make him go completely numb during whenever they had late-night sex.

“..They contacted me just recently, actually. It’s on the twenty-seventh of this month.” The center nodded his head as if another part of him was agreeing with himself. He stopped, and again, the room seemed to fill with the sound of silence.

“How much do you want to get out of this, Der?” A pair of medium-colored eyes stared up at him, also filled with much questioning. Derek’s own eyes looked back into them, his own questions more than likely swimming in them, as well. Thomas should know, shouldn’t he? He was the superstar out of the two, and he must’ve figured it out already that he was going to have to be one of the new leaders on the team. Derek also figured that with all the money Thomas would be receiving out of his new deal, he would realize that Derek probably wouldn’t be able to stay in Buffalo long enough if – whatever deal he could get – would pull through.

“I don’t know, Thomas. I really don’t know.” The smaller man closed his eyes, and drew in a breath. The air was cold – it reminded him of being out on the ice. “All I’m asking for is a little more, that’s it. I feel like I’ve done better this year than I have previously, but-“ He trailed off. He was about to say he owed it all to his wingers – the incredibly fast Maxim Afinogenov, a guy who could make other players dizzy with his speed and the upcoming young talent, Thomas Vanek, knowing to be an almost to perfect screen and tipper.

“But what, Derek?”
“I do owe you and…Max, for helping me out with as successful as my season – our season – was. Really.” He opened his eyes, and he could feel his mouth muscles twinge as he whispered the name back to him. Max. A part of Derek, deep down inside, still loved the Russian. He never wanted Thomas to know because of how devoted they had been to each other the past couple of months. The three men had their moments previously with each other, but Derek knew Max was only in it for him. Max never loved Thomas the way he should’ve but they still continued to be friends after the right winger broke off for a model he had met while staying in Russia for the All Star break. It was blatantly obvious Max still loved Derek; he could tell that by just talking with him on the bench during a game.

“Derek, you’ve got to be kidding me.” Thomas now unhooked his arms from around Derek’s smaller figure, and grabbed both of his hands. “Teamwork is a key in the game, yes, but you can never find your true talent among those around you. It’s what you’ve got inside that matters the most to the game! It’s different from anyone; finding their talents. I mean, how do you think you’ve gotten into the NHL? Talent! It’s there Derek, you’re just praising guys like Max and I to take the praise for you. I can’t have that.” A small smile crept up onto his face. Derek could see a small glimmer in Thomas’ eyes as well – tears, perhaps? But he continued to press on:

“And so help me god if you’re not in Buffalo next year, I do not want to been hearing you on TV or whatever praising your linemates for something you obviously completed yourself. The time when you can praise your team is when the game is over and done with, Derek. Congratulate them on their accomplishments.” He blinked, and sniffled in a bit of air. It was apparent that he was shaking now. “Wow, and…I don’t think I’ve ever said stuff like that to anyone before. I think the presence of Chris or Danny must still be in the room.” He laughed, and smiled again. Derek couldn’t help but smile either. Both at what Thomas had just told him, and the mention of their ex co-captains. He couldn’t help but feel what Thomas was saying was right – There was just so much praise you could give to those around you before you start to forget that it was actually you that made sparks fly.

“I…I understand what you’re trying to tell me, Thomas. Thank you.” Derek continued to smile, and once again gave his lover a tight hug. He breathed the Austrian’s scent in deeply, and sighed. “I still can’t say that I deserve all the credit for what our line has accomplished this past season.”

“Well…I guess I am kind of awesome when it comes to wraparounds.” He stifled a laugh. “Or shootouts, oh boy, don’t get me started.”

“Thomas, I’m serious.” Derek gave him a playful shove, and received a grin from the younger man. “Why do you think you’re getting all that money in the first place? You just think they want to throw it away? You’ve got something, obviously.”

“But Derek, don’t you see? It’s not about the money.” Thomas shook his head, blonde hairs wisped around slightly. “Getting into the NHL was never about the money, ever. Money won’t get you a Stanley Cup.* I know I have a chance here, Derek. Edmonton was an option, yes, but I’ve been with you guys for so long – we’ve just become one big family.* I couldn’t pass up that chance, not even for the world.”

Derek stared toward the man he loved, and nodded. He admired Thomas for those words – words a true champion spoke. He knew the road he wanted to take, the one leading straight to the Stanley Cup. He knew the winger would do everything in his power to get there with the team he’s been with since the beginning.

Derek only wished he would soon be following the same fate.
