I just read an interview with him this morning that was done sometime in the very beginning of the season. He kind of fell into Philadelphia.
The avs could fit him under the salery cap with Joe and... it mentioned someone else... Blaker? That's why he left. And Clarkie (As much as I hate that GM bastard) made the right call at the right time.
