"He's my Companion," Dan said quietly. "If another Wizard tries to come here and kill him, I'm going to fight."

"We know," Chris said and sighed again. "But what if they don't stop coming? You can't fight the whole Wizard population of North America and Europe. And you can't force him to hide behind you all his life."

"Then you'd better figure out how to fix this."

"We'll try, okay?" Chris promised and turned as he heard the knock at the door. "That's either Pav and Andreas or our Wardens."

"Both," Dan answered as he looked out the peephole.

He opened the door and let them in.

End Part 2

"You fine?" Pavel asked and reached out to grab Dan's elbow.

"I'm fine," he told Pavel. "And so is Johan."

Pavel nodded and gave him a brief smile.

"Anything we can do?" Andreas asked and moved his stick from one hand to the other. "Since it's obvious that we can't just kill the Demon here? Hej, Mule."

"Hej," he said back, pausing slightly.

"Yeah," Chris said. "We'll put up protective spells around Dan's house. To mask everything going on here. Mac, Aaron, we need containment for Johan, to be safe. We'll add a cloaking spell when you're done. And one of you should stay here, if you don't mind."

"I will," Aaron offered. "Do you want the containment spells on him or on his equipment?"

"Him, for now," Chris decided before turning around to face Johan again. "Demons don't need sticks and other equipment, right?"

He shook his head. "No. Is this going to hurt?"

Chris chuckled. "From personal experience, I can tell you...no," he promised and glanced at Mac.

"Don't worry, we'll be careful," Mac promised and smiled.

"Thanks," he whispered. "Do what you have to do."

"Upstairs," Dan said firmly. "My bedroom. He's not leaving without me."

He reached out and clasped Johan's hand.

"Fine," Mac said. "After you."

Dan nodded and squeezed Johan's hand before leading them up the stairs.

"Let's put up charms and spells," Chris said to the other Wizards.

"Pav, you and Lils do the outside," Steve told them "Chris and I will put them around the house."

They nodded and all hurried off in different directions.

Half an hour later, they all met up in the kitchen again.

"Our part is done," Mac said as he and Aaron came back down the stairs. "No magic. It's up to you big guys to finish the job now."

Chris nodded. "Any problems?" he asked while reaching for his stick and his bag.

"No," Aaron answered. "Mule's nervous, but he's trusting us to help him."

"And Dan?" Steve asked and reached for his things as well.

"Is being protective but isn't going to stop us."

"Good," Chris nodded and started toward the stairs. "Let's finish this."

The other three nodded and followed him up the stairs.

Weaving a cloaking spell was not that complicated. Chris whispered the enchantment and heard it repeated, word by word, by Steve, before the Swedish and Russian words of Andreas' and Pavel's spells joined it, weaving a tight protection that wouldn't even break if something happened to one of them.

"Are you sure it's going to work?" Johan asked when they were done.

Dan nodded and squeezed his hand. "I've never seen a spell woven together so tightly," he told him. "I can't feel you and I'm touching you."

Johan sighed and bent his head. "I'm sorry," he told the Wizard.

"I wish you had told me," Dan told him honestly.

"I was afraid."

"You could have trusted me," Dan said. He looked to the four Wizards standing around them. "What are you going to do now?"

"Going home," Chris said with a shrug. "Aaron will stick around and call us if anything changes."

"Thank you," Johan told him. "For not killing me."

The 'yet' hung unspoken in the air between them, but Chris only nodded. He was exhausted, and he suddenly just wanted to go home and crawl back into bed with Kris.

"Get some sleep," Steve advised.

Dan nodded and stood. "Let me show you out," he said. "You want the guestroom or the couch?"

"Whatever works best for you," Aaron said with a small smile. "I can take a kitchen chair, if you want."

"The guestroom is more comfortable," Dan smiled.

"I'll take care of it," Johan offered and stood as well. He blinked at the dizziness running through his body, but it soon disappeared.

"Take it easy," Chris suggested. "Okay? And let us know if you find out anything about your mother."

"I will," he promised.

"Good. Get some rest."

"Think Mike'll understand if we miss practice today?" Lils muttered as they went back down the stairs.

Chris chuckled. "Ask your Companion to put in a good word for us?" he suggested.

Lils snorted. "He's not going to do it," he replied. "Nick has his principles."

"Tell him he stay out all night next time," Pavel grumbled.

Chris laughed weakly. "He could do it," he said. "And be fit and awake and perfect at practice."

"Probably," Lils agreed. "It's his flaw."

They all laughed.

"I'll see you at practice then," Chris finally said and pulled his car keys out of his pocket. "Awake and not quite perfect."

"None of us are," Lils laughed. "Just Nick."

"Yeah," Chris muttered with a sigh.

"C'mon," Steve said. "Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll be a short practice."

"You've met Mike, right?" Chris said and put his stick and bag in the backseat of his car. "Come on, I drop you off at home."

"Thanks," Steve said. "I'll make sure there's good coffee waiting for you at the arena."

"Appreciate it," Chris yawned. "When will you leave for New York?"

"Tomorrow night."

"Okay." Chris took a deep breath. "We'll try to survive without you around," he teased.

"I can postpone the trip," Steve offered.

"No," Chris shook his head. "You shouldn't. Take it as a vacation. Spend a few days with Brendan."

"If something comes up with Johan--"

"I'll call you immediately."

"Thanks."

They spent the rest of the drive in comfortable silence.

~*~*~

"How are you feeling?" Dan asked as he pulled into the arena lot.

"Still dizzy," Johan admitted and pulled his cap deeper into his face. "I think the spells are interfering with each other."

"Concussion like symptoms?" he offered.

"Like that," Johan agreed and rubbed his temples slightly. "How is that possible?"

Dan shrugged slightly. "Very strong Wizard magic versus your Demon side. A side-effect maybe? We can ask Chris."

"Maybe we should," Johan said hesitantly.

"His car is here, let's go find him."

Johan nodded and quietly followed Dan inside.

"Chris," Dan greeted as they found the goalie sitting in front of his locker, a large cup of coffee in his hands. "We have a problem."

Chris blinked at them. "What kind of problem?" he asked and ran a hand through his hair, making it stick up wildly.

"I don't feel well," Johan told him. "At all. I'm dizzy and things feel kind of fuzzy."

Chris stood and put a hand on his shoulder. He concentrated briefly, feeling along the energy lines and spikes around the other man.

"Shit," he murmured finally. "Let's get you to a witchdoctor."

"What's wrong?" Johan whispered.

"I don't know for sure," Chris told him. "That's why I want you to talk to a witchdoctor. They are better prepared to deal with something like this."

"Am I going to die?"

"Sure," Chris said. "But not today. Or tomorrow. Or any day of this week."

He gave a single nod, just barely resisting the urge to lean against Dan. "When do we go?"

"Now," Chris said firmly. "You have the address of the local one?"

"Yeah," Dan said. "Are you going to come too?"

"Only if you insist," Chris said. "You can handle this."

He gave a nervous nod. "If you're sure."

"I'm sure." Chris sighed softly. "Go there now, tell him the situation - your Companion has been under Demonic influence that's not removable, tell him that. He'll know what to do."

"Okay," he said and took Johan's arm. "Let's go."

Chris watched them leave and took a large gulp of coffee.

He needed to talk to Mike, and he needed to call the doc, to make sure he was prepared. He needed to call Steve, let him know what had happened, and he needed to talk to Pav and Hank about the tight connection they obviously shared and that even allowed them to communicate mentally without any obvious problems. He needed to write an evaluation for Andreas, and he had promised Kris to take care of the grocery shopping.

And all he wanted to do was go home, crawl into bed and take a long nap.

He definitely needed more coffee.

He sighed and very slowly started to put on his equipment. He could have more coffee after practice.

He'd learned years ago not to drink too much before practice.

"You look horrible, Ozzie," Mike mentioned when he stepped on the ice. "You okay?"

"Can we add a few more hours to the day?" he grumbled.

"You want to practice longer?" Mike grinned.

"You want a goalie that can actually stop pucks or one that falls asleep during the games?" Chris countered.

"Want me to start Dom tomorrow night?"

"Yes ... no ... maybe," he muttered. He shook his head. "No. I was already out for five games."

"Okay." Mike nodded. "Anything else I should know?" he asked, knowing perfectly well that Chris was the one he needed to talk to whenever magic was involved.

"Too much to tell you right now," Chris said honestly.

"Anything very important?"

"Mule," Chris sighed. "There were...complications. I sent Dan to see a doctor with him."

"Damn," he groaned. He mentally rearranged lines as he tried to to figure out who was going to be called up. "Are they both going to be out of the next game?"

"Dan will be here," Chris promised. "But he needs to explain to the doc what's going on."

"Okay," Mike said. "You sure you don't need the day off. I'm only going to offer this once."

Chris groaned. "Don't offer it again," he pleaded. "Or I just might say yes."

Mike chuckled. "The offer's off the table. Now get out there."

"Yes," Chris said and slowly skated toward his goal.

Mike watched him for a few seconds and hoped that the Wizard wasn't pushing himself too hard.

He didn't always know what was going on in the Wizard world. He, like most of the population, only knew the most basic things about Wizards. He just knew that they were needed to keep the Demon population under control. The papers were filled with news of Demons killing humans, and everybody knew that only the Wizards stood between Demons and humans.

It didn't make things easier when planning for the next game, he thought with a sigh as he watched Drapes step on the ice and glance nervously in the direction of the goal.

Half of his team on edge meant that they either were going to have a really good game or a horrible one. And the absolute uncertainty meant that he was going to have a sleepness night.

Nick skated by him and gave him a curious glance.

He ignored it and raised his whistle. The only way to avoid the bad game was to remind all of them that he was the one in charge. For the next few hours, the Demons and everything outside of the arena didn't matter.
