“I guess I still don't get how your mind changed...” you say softly, almost inaudibly as you move your eyes from where he'd been laying against your chest, to where he is now, standing beside your bed after coming back from the kitchen for a drink. You don't want to speak too loud, just in case the volume of your voice scares him or something and he decides to leave.
It's not like you're complaining. You're not stupid. But you're curious. He went from wanting you to go away and never speak to him, to telling you, more or less, that he loves you, and letting you fuck him in your bed. He's normally as stubborn as an ox with twice the kick and the fact that he changed his mind without you really even saying anything...well, you find yourself more than just a bit confused. His eyes meet yours, and you see that maybe, he's just as confused as you are, although it's his thoughts causing the confusion to begin with. It reminds you that even though Marc Savard is amazing and beautiful, he's ever mysterious, to everyone—including himself.
And when he looks at you, it shows you exactly how confused he is by himself. His eyes are wide, like someone had just told him a scandalous secret, and his shoulders square in defense. He bites his lip. “To tell you the truth, I have no idea...” he says quietly, softly, and you nod in understanding, even if it's only a half understanding. You see the fear in his eyes, and you swear to yourself that someday, you'll get rid of it.
You cast your eyes to the bed momentarily, then look back at him with a quick nibble on your lower lip. “You know...I was thinking on the way here, of when I first knew that I loved you...” you say, glancing over at him to see his reaction, and he actually doesn't seem fazed by it, which is a pleasant surprise. You half expect him to get up and call a cab to take him to Ristuccia to get his car, but he doesn't. He stays put, and seems to urge you to continue.
“And? When did you?” he asks, intrigue in his eyes and a smile on his lips.
You return his smile and think about it a little more, because, really, it's starting to become clear to you that maybe you've loved him all along. He's the only one, the
only one that you'd have even thought of canceling a night with Albe for. The only one you ever have done that for. “I didn't know it at the time, but...I think it started at the beginning of the season, actually. When we were in Anaheim and after the game we were just walking around...talking and looking for a bar to go to, and I got this weird, really happy feeling. Kind of safe, but really, really happy...” you pause, realizing how sappy that sounds.
He seems more or less stunned, but he smiles softly at you. “Wow...” is all he says for a moment, and you're momentarily worried that you freaked him out. But when you open your mouth to say something, he stops you and shows you a warm grin. “So, basically, if we had talked about this a lot sooner, we could probably have saved ourselves a lot of emotional stress?” he asks you.
Your eyes widen and you roll onto your side, catching his eyes and smiling a little more. So, he's felt for you, longer than the past couple of days? “So wait...” you say, propping your head up on your hand and putting your elbow on the bed. “You're meaning to tell me that this sudden...thing...between us wasn't spur of the moment? You had actually felt it for awhile too?”
He laughs and nods, scooting a bit closer to you and leaning his head back against the pillow. “For a couple of months, actually. But I was freaked, and didn't want to say anything, because I thought that you and Albe were a serious thing, and—”
You let out a slight laugh and shake your head. “No, no. Albe and I were no more than one of those things of convenience...and...what we just did? Felt way, way better than it ever has with him...” you say sheepishly, and suddenly feel your lips being attacked and covered by Marc's. You let off a smile as you sneak your hand into his hair, watching with a contented smile as he pulls away. He's smiling at you too, and you wonder if there's something behind it. But you're pretty sure that the 'deep talk' is over with for the night. Because the day has been emotionally exhausting for both of you. You caress his cheek in your hand, smile and turn to flick the light off.
But he stops you, putting a hand on your arm and pulling your attention back to him. “Dennis?” he says your name in a scared, insecure tone, like he's afraid you'll disappear into dust.
“Hm?” you respond softly, rolling back onto your side, facing him and watching his face grow even more scared. And you feel it in your gut. Something big is coming. And for a second you're scared, but laden in the fear in Marc's eyes, you see a slight bit of happiness, and it makes you wonder if what he's going to say is actually that bad.
He looks pensive for a moment, then looks at you with a renewed sense of assurance in what he's saying. His eyes lock with yours and his smile grows a little. “I love you...”
For a second, you're totally thrown off. Since feeling it and saying it are two totally different instances. But he's looking at you like he really, really feels it, and this makes you happier than you ever remember being in your life. “I love you too, Marc...” you respond, and you lean forward to catch his lips with yours.
When the kiss (which is surprisingly chaste, really) breaks, his arms wrap around you, and he simply hugs you...and you think, since you met a year or so ago, this is the first time he has ever just...hugged you. You've given those generic man-hugs before, while out with the guys, or after one of you won a drinking contest...but never an embrace like this. And the whole situation just grounds you. Makes everything real.
Not only do you love Marc Savard, but Marc Savard loves you. And you feel like you're invincible.
