ME AND YOU
Title: Me and You
Author:
geekintehpink
Pairing/Characters: Milan Lucic/David Krejci
Rating: PG.
Summary: Milan wants to tell David. Desperately. But he can't.
Word Count: 708
Disclaimer: Don't own, don't sue. Kthxbai.
“We're quite the pair, aren't we?”
You turn your head when he speaks, eyes falling upon the other man, your best friend, smiling when you see his marred skin. The two of you match now. Well, not quite match, but you take solace in the fact that you're not the only one who looks, well, not your best. If he wasn't so...him, and he didn't make you so...idiotic, you'd probably say something. Probably do something more than give off a halfhearted nod and look back down at your skate as you tried to put it on your bag, which suddenly becomes more than just a little fascinating.
“What's the matter?” he asks you.
You shrug and look up at him, suddenly feeling like you could just disappear. How is it that you, Mr. Confident, can look at him and lose every single ounce of the confidence that you were always known for? You run a hand through your hair and look back at the floor. He wouldn't be interested in you. Not the way you're interested in him. He's beautiful. Even with that giant bump on his lip, he's the most beautiful human being you have ever seen. You shrug and look at him again.
“Nothing,” you say with an unsure sigh.
You've seen guys do this before. Guys on the team, even. Muzz and Savvy? They were so obvious about the fact that they're in love, that you're surprised that the rest of the world doesn't know about it. Not that you would ever tell anyone, mostly because you think that it's awesome that they met and it was like the past didn't matter. They just let it go. And...you want that. Want it desperately. But not with just anyone.
“That's not nothing, Milan,” he says as he throws his bag over his shoulder.
You know that if you tell him now, the flight to DC will be filled with awkwardness, and you're not sure if you can do that. You want to join the team in their celebration, want him to be able to, too, and not have the lingering feeling of the confession you have to make on your minds. He doesn't deserve that, as much as you wish you could be selfish and do it. You love him too much for that, though. With a pasted smile, you look up at him and shrug.
“Don't worry about it, Krej. We just won, why don't you celebrate it...” you say, putting your bag over your shoulder and leaving him in the locker room before he can object. Sometimes you think that your ex from juniors was right about you when she told you that you need to grow a pair. Because you know Krej. You know that he won't make you feel like less of a person when he tells you that he doesn't feel the same way. He's just not that type of guy. Even if you tell him, though, and he reacts the way you're sure he will and tells you that you're better friends, which you'd still continue to be...it would make it a lot harder.
Because he would know. And he wouldn't care.
And because of that? You know you're making the right decision. You nod in self-affirmation as you make your way out of the locker room and head toward the bus. Sure, it would be nice if he could know, but...you know it's not smart. So, you just keep your mouth shut and let it pass. Partially because of your sense of self preservation, but mostly for him. And to preserve your friendship. Because you know you couldn't lose him. Ever.
