Story: Desert Sand
Title: Desert Sand
Characters: Joffrey Lupul/Scottie Upshall, Mike Richards
Teams: Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers
Rating: G
Notes: I own nothing, and as far as I know this never happened. Told from Scottie's point of view.
I woke up in the morning with the sun glaring in my eyes, and I groaned softly. I looked over, smiling a bit at the sleeping form of Joff laying half on me and half on the couch. I gently moved him off of me before getting up. I grabbed my bag from the kitchen and took one last look around. With a heavy sigh, I quietly shut the door and headed down the hallway, taking the stairs in twos. I wasn’t sure how much longer I could hold off this façade. I took a deep breath once I was out in the chilly Philadelphia air, and sighed. I glanced back at the apartment complex, then began walking down the street.
When I finally found my car, I tossed my bag in the back and just sat there for a minute. I stared at the steering wheel before slowly turning the key to start the engine. As I pulled away from the complex and onto the semi-busy road, the feelings slowly started to set in. Within an hour I’d be on my way to Phoenix.
I settled down into a seat on the plane, hoping that nobody would sit next to me. I could already feel the tears burning, and I was trying my hardest just to hold them back. I ran my thumb over my cell phone again, debating on whether or not I wanted to text Joff and at least tell him I was leaving. I sighed, turning my phone off and gazing out the window. I felt the seat next to me shift, and I glanced over. I blinked a few times before the image of Joff fell away, and a kid was who I seen in front of me. He had his headphones on and his iPod blaring. I pulled my arms tighter to me in an effort to comfort myself. I leaned my head against the window, watching the lights of Philly slowly disappear.
My legs shook violently and all I wanted to do was run back onto the plane and hide in the bathroom. I shivered at the temperature change, quickly making my way inside the airport. I quickly picked up my bag, and glanced around. My heart sank a little when I realized they had sent nobody to pick me up. When I had arrived in Philly, Joff and Richie were there with huge smiles on their faces. I sighed, gripping my sticks a bit tighter as I flagged down a taxi.
As the taxi driver easily maneuvered his way through the streets, I ran my thumb over my cell phone once more. I opened a new text message to Joff, hesitantly typing the letters.
Hey…I landed in Phoenix. I miss you so much Joff.
I reread the message a few times before hitting the ‘end’ button and not sending the message. I sighed, hitting my head on the back of the seat. So I’m back in the West, where I started off. So why aren’t I happy?
I tossed and turned on the uncomfortable hotel bed. I finally gave up on trying to fall asleep, and instead opted for staring at my ceiling. I squinted my eyes, then closed them fully. I rubbed my eyes tiredly, willing my mind to stop debating on whether or not I should call Joff. As if on cue, my phone began to vibrate on the small dresser next to my bed. I propped myself up on one arm, reaching with the other. Once my eyes adjusted to the screen I sighed.
“Hey Richie…” I mumbled, running a tired hand through my hair. I heard Richie chuckle a bit on the other end, then sigh.
“Expecting Joff?” Mike mumbled amusement clear in his voice. I glared at the obnoxiously white wall in front of me, wanting to do nothing more than punch it. “Scottie? You there?”
“What? Yeah Mike, yeah I’m here. And yes, I was expected Joff. Erm, well really more like expecting him to at least call or text and ask me how the flight was or SOMETHING.” I said, leaning back against my pillow and playing with a stray string on my shirt. I let out a heavy sigh, absently mindedly playing with my hair as silence greeted me on the other end of the phone. I checked my phone and seen that Richie had hung up and sighed. I pulled a blanket out of a bag and pulled it over me and shut my eyes tightly.
I woke up in a cold sweat, pulling my blanket closer to me as I tried to even out my breathing. I glanced at the alarm clock placed next to my bed and sighed. I threw the blanket off, shivering even more at the cold room temperature from the air conditioner. I set some clothes on my bed and walked off into the shower.
I practically ran out of the arena after practice, feeling more and more pathetic by the second. I kept checking my phone like crazy. Nothing. I guess he lied when he said we’d keep in touch. I gripped the steering wheel tighter, watching my knuckles turn white as I floored it down the highway. I let up on my speed once the exit to the hotel came into view. I slammed my door, satisfied when it echoed throughout the whole floor. I turned around, falling back against my door.
“How’d you…why are you?” My voice trailed off staring at Joff in shock in front of me. He was sitting on my bed cross legged and looking as innocent as ever. He widened his eyes, giving me his best puppy dog look as he got off the bed and walked over to me. I watched his every move, my stare hard and cold. However, my stare softened when Joff wrapped his arms around my waist in a hug and buried his head in my shoulder.
“I missed you Scottie.” He mumbled into my shoulder, and I hesitantly hugged him back. I felt his warm tears hit my neck and sighed. I rubbed soothing circles on his back, pulling him closer in comfort.
“How long are they letting you stay?” I asked softly, being patient as I waited for an answer.
“A few days.” Joff’s muffled voice said, pulling away and walking over to the bed once again. He sat down, sheepishly holding my favorite hoodie out to me. I gave him a confused look, hiding the smile that was bound to show at any moment.
“You uh…left it in Philly.” Joff mumbled, looking everywhere but me. I let out a small scoff, holding the hoodie closer to me.
“By “You left in Philly”, you mean, ‘Scottie, I stole your hoodie so that I’d have an excuse to run to Phoenix after you’.” I said smugly, smiling when Joff let out an embarrassed laugh.
“Something like that.” Joff said with a grin, pulling the blanket over him and shutting his eyes. I laughed, walking into the small kitchenette and making some food. I sat down next to him, offering him the food. Joff eagerly took it, scarfing down the whole bowl as I looked for something to watch on pay per view.
