Title: In The Grey
Characters: Dennis Wideman/Andrew Alberts
Rating: PG
Summary: Was there something between 'friends' and 'lovers'?
Disclaimer: They really are BFFL, but I have no idea what their sexual preferences are ;)

It was once the light was out that Dennis was safe to admire the dark figure beside him. There were long moments before he was sure Andrew was asleep, listening to a steady breath escaping from his mouth. He silently watched the hidden brownie-batter colored eyes move against his eyelids as he fell deeper into sleep. His lips were slightly parted, as if he was in the middle of speaking. Dennis blinked hard, shaking his head as if he was trying to get rid of the silent thoughts that were making their way up to his mouth.

The bond between Dennis and Andrew was as complicated as the knot on one of Dennis' shoelaces. Friends? Very much so. Best friends? Definitely. What came next? Was there something between 'friends' and 'lovers'? It was the grey area that had no definition. Neither of them would admit to anything. He had worried that maybe that is where they were destined to stay. There would be nothing except midnight admirations and silent desires.

Dennis turned over, facing the door and watched as the shadow from the tree outside moved, a quiet wind knocking the branches against the window. It tapped along with the beating of his heart against his chest, a melody for his thoughts. The unsatisfied want clutched his insides, tightening and twisting, gripping at his mind. Just a touch. That's all I want from you, he said to himself.

Is that all you want? a soft voice responded. Dennis carefully turned over, his heart skipping about three beats as Andrew's eyes softly opened, a smirk taking over his face. Dennis opened his mouth, trying to speak, his words stopping around the middle of his throat. Andrew seemed to glide across the bed, a hand coming to rest on his shoulder. A shock followed, igniting his body to create an inner electrical storm. Andrew tilted his head, as if he was asking if his friend was satisfied. Dennis calmed the storm, the corners of his lips turning up. For a moment, the grey was gone. He took hold of Andrew's hand, keeping it as he turned over and placed it on the other shoulder. The hand moved against his arm, sailing over his skin, resting above his elbow.

'Stay there,' Dennis spoke just above a whisper.

It was as if he could hear Andrew smiling in the dark. 'I'm not going anywhere.'

If Dennis could, he would keep it exactly like that.
